Description
The daughter of Finnish immigrants, my husband's grandmother Inga, grew up on a dairy farm in Northern Minnesota. She and her husband raised six daughters in a suburb of Minneapolis. Inga worked in the sterilization department of a hospital. When she retired, she filled her days with gardening, crafts, volunteering, and family gatherings. She took these pursuits quite seriously, crocheting hundreds of pieces of lace, sewing quilts for donations to local shelters, and cooking lefsa for holiday potlucks. For birthdays and holidays, she would send handmade cards to each member of the family, with a letter tucked into each one, along with a cash gift. Her notes always spoke of the weather, her crochet and quilting work, and how much she enjoyed working in the garden. "Inga's Garden" is a mixed media dimensional work measuring 20 in. x 16 in. x 2 in. The work is a remembrance piece that incorporates her living room wallpaper pattern on its edges and includes an assemblage of her crochet work, along with one of her cherished letters, nestled in the reverse of the cradled panel.
